Changing Plans

So, I've been thinking.

Remember in February when I went to the South Carolina Book Festival? The SCWW is a big part of that crowd. The more I've been figuring up prices for the convention, and figuring out what choices would be best for me, the more I've been wondering if that convention is really where I ought to be going.

I want a convention or conference that's going to help me get my con-bearings before I go to Austin next April for the World Horror Con. The only thing close to this I've been to is Dragon Con - and this is a whole different world.

So, I put out some feelers on Twitter, and one of the horror writers I messaged responded. I asked what a good convention for horror writers would be, and she suggested KillerCon. After looking it up, I realized it sounded perfect - a horror and thriller writers' convention, with agents from the industry in attendance and two on-site writing contests... Whoooo!

So, I think I'm changing my plans. I want to connect with other writers from South Carolina, but I think I need to do that after I've found an agent or publisher which will be a good fit for my work.

What do y'all think? Stick with the home territory or go for the genre?

I think you have to do what's best in the long run for you. I am not the best person to gove advice about writing as I class book writing different to poetry,
Good luck whatever you decide I'm sure you'll make the right descion.

Sounds like you know what you're doing. Getting your work in front of the agents that represent your genre is one of the most important things you can do...great choice!

Hope you have fun!

i'd probably stick with the home territory first. But that's me. I'm a chicken.
Either way, though, i'm sure you'll have a great time

The one in your genre sounds like it would provide a more fun and informative experience for you.

I've met some of my closest writing friends by attending conferences outside of my home base - people I speak with in some form every day.

Check the schedules of both conferences and see which one offers the best workshops / networking opportunities for your career.

And have fun!

I don't know anything about the specific conferences, but I DO think connecting WITHIN GENRE probably is a smarter investment of time and money if it isn't that much more of each--the agents and publishers will all be looking for what YOU have to offer. The talks will be more targeted... If you can swing it, I say go for it!

Genre seems like a logical choice since you'd be weeding out elements you don't really need for you immediate concerns and focusing on the ones who you need to be in contact with. Doing your research sounds like a wise thing to do. Good luck!

Go for the genre.

Go for everything you can at this point, but I'd say one aimed at your genre would be better.

I would go for the genre but always keep your options open. Thanks you for posting this! I would love to go to a horror convention!!

Thanks for the thoughts guys!! I think I am going to go for KillerCon instead of the SCWW, as long as I can swing the extra cash for airfare. It's not within driving distance for me unlike the SCWW.

Palindrome, you should check out World Horror Con! I linked to it in my post. Maybe we could meet at the con next year! :D

Tough choice - I'd say try the new one for another perspective :)

I'll go with the others who suggested going with your genre con. It sounds like a really good choice for you. :)
